I’m going to keep this short mainly because I’m probably going to say what has been said already a million times, the feeling of being surrounded by thousands of like-minded people just showers you in such a positivity that Comic-Con truly feels magical (yeah I said “magical”, deal with it).
I attended my first Comic-Con this past week, living out my nerd boy dreams and fantasies. I would have gone sooner but being on the East Coast with limited funds had always stood in my way. Even though I had the misfortune of only being able to get a friday and sunday ticket because of the whole online tickets fiasco, I still had an awesome time. The whole downtown area is full of events and sponsored locations that were free and fun.
Can’t wait for NYComic-Con in Oct to give myself a nice booster shot of nerdage to hold me over. I wish the Javitz Center was located in a better area. One great thing about San Diego’s Comic-Con is that right outside the doors of the convention center is the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego with tons of Bars and Restaurants and hotels. Many locations became sponsored by a TV station or website (like the Syfy Cafe, or the CNET station). Yes the Javitz Center is in Midtown Manhattan, but 4 long blocks west of anything that’s really happening. While 4 blocks don’t seem like much, it does have its effects. There are no surrounding events just outside of the convention. It’s more of a come and go home kinda con, not a hang around in bars in costume con. The inside however feels the same as the San Diego one minus the famous people and the panel after star-studded panel.
Highlights:
Attending a live taping of the Nerdist podcast and sitting right in the 2nd row, center! They did 2 shows, an 8pm which sold out (listen to it now), and an 11pm show, which I was able to get tickets for. That taping should be up on the Nerdist.com soon.
Guests: Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Kevin Perreira (G4′s Attack of the Show), Rifftrax/MST3K guys, Paul and Storm (w00tstock).
Spending way too much time in the Nintendo Gaming Lounge. Made me really want a 3DS, and now that the price dropped from $250 to $169, I might get it. Kid Icarus 3DS reboot was just awesome, so was Zelda and Mario Kart. They are even bringing back Shinobi.
The Devilicious food truck with their Butter Poached Lobster Grilled Cheese and their BBBLT..mmmmmmmm
Constantly running into Adventure Time parade/procession everytime I was outside (I took this video!)
And here are the million photos, click any of them to enlarge them: (all photos by me)
